About Us

Portumna Rugby Club was only reformed in 2002, a massive 40 years since their last game.  The decision was initially conceived late one night when a number of ex-rugby players got talking about the “good old times” in one of the local “watering holes”.  What seemed like a good idea then, still seemed like a good idea the next morning and so the process was put in place.

While the “alacadoos” and “Blazers” who re-started this great plan had obviously hung up their boots a long time, they still had the considerable energy to kick start the process and breathe some life in the seemingly dead club.

Initially they used the facilities in the local school, but now they have graduated to some rented land under the shadows of Portumna Castle and while they previously used the facilities at the Shannon Oaks Hotel & Country Club as their changing area and unofficial clubhouse, they have had to rely on the generosity and friendship of the local GAA club since the hotel went on fire a few years ago.

Portumna RFC have a lease agreed on new land and have secured full planning permission for new pitches and clubhouse – now all we have to do is find money to build these new facilities.  There are very exciting times ahead for our young and vibrant club.

We would consider ourselves a very welcoming club and anyone who wants to get involved in playing, coaches, reffing or just getting involved in rugby is very welcome, just contact us and we will take it from there.
