Mini Rugby

Mini Rugby = U7’s to U12’s

Portumna Pumas represent the Minis section of Portumna RFC.  The Pumas are in their infancy having only been founded in 2009, but are going from strength to strength and have approx. 100 players from under 8’s to Under 12’s.

Based in the hurling heartland of East Galway it is always going to be a little harder to “convert” some players, but we firmly believe that having players sample and participate in multiple sports will produce much more rounded and better athletes and therefore we embrace other sports as oppose to fighting against them, which is an ethos that we feel is shared by other sporting codes in Portumna.  Indeed Portumna favourite rugby son, John Muldoon, has an All Ireland Minor hurling medal.

While learning new skills in a safe environment is hugely important to the players and coaches, the overriding emphasis in Portumna is making sure that the players have fun.  The Pumas philosophy is quite simple; if you’re not having fun you won’t continue to play rugby.

While based in Connacht and very proud to be so, Portumna Rugby Club is somewhat unique in that a significant portion of their players come from “over the bridge” in Munster and a few even sneak in from Leinster.  The Pumas regularly host blitzes with teams from Connacht, Leinster and Munster participating which is always great for an extra ”bit of edge”.

Training is on Sundays @ 10.30 AM – Contact Mark for more details – 087 6434230

Youth Rugby  = U13’s and Beyond

2014/2015 saw Portumna field their first ever Youth team when the boys U13’s took to the pitch.  It is very hard to make the jump from Mini Rugby to Youth, but we took the decision to amalgamate the U12 and U13 teams in order to have sufficient number to field at U13 level.

So far this has proved to be a very worthwhile decision and the team has improved with every match they played and are winning as many as not.   There is no league as such, but they play a full set of fixtures (test matches) and once finished they play in a cup and plate competition.  At the time of writing Portumna re in the Plate quarter-final.

Hopefully this is the start of something great within the club, because we firmly believe that if your structures are not right at the bottom, they will never be right at the top.

For the 2018/2019 Season unfortunately we don’t have sufficient player numbers to field any youth teams.
